(Higuey, Dominican Republic, 2014)
Nana was one of the first Dominican Haitian woman I knew when living in Punta Cana. We were working together, she was a tough worker with no fears at all. Her infancy was a hard one, one weekend she invited me to visit the batey where she grew up.
The bateyes are rural communities that emerged around the sugar industry in the Dominican Republic. These little towns began to settle at the beginning of the 19th century, when sugar cane plantations expanded the use of itinerant Haitian people, through not regulated way of labor.
